Texans Quarterback Davis Mills Looking to Compete for Starting Job Against Rookie CJ Stroud

The Houston Texans have an intriguing quarterback battle brewing as they head into the upcoming NFL season. After selecting rookie CJ Stroud with the second overall pick in this year's NFL Draft, it seemed apparent that the Texans viewed him as the future franchise quarterback. However, Davis Mills, the incumbent quarterback, is not going down without a fight.

During the Texans' OTA's (Organized Team Activities), Mills took first-team reps while Stroud worked with the second team. This development clearly indicates that the coaching staff sees Mills as a legitimate contender for the starting job. The writing may be on the wall, but Mills is determined to prove his worth.

After practice, Mills spoke to the media about his mindset heading into the competition. "I'm competing for that starting job," Mills said confidently. "Since I've been drafted in the NFL, I've been in a competition. I don't think anything is going to change. It's been great getting to know C.J. so far. He's an extremely hard worker, and it will be good to see how we go out there every day and make each other better."

Mills, who started 15 games last season, showed promise but had his fair share of ups and downs. He completed 61 percent of his passes with 17 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. His performance was uneven at times, leading the Texans to turn to backup quarterback Kyle Allen. However, Mills believes he has grown and learned from those experiences.

"Every year in this league, you feel more and more comfortable," Mills explained. "Obviously, the hunger and the drive to become better is still there. It's definitely a different feeling from when I was stepping in here as a rookie, not knowing anything, to where I am now, having all that built-up experience from my starts over these past two years. I mean, it's exciting. I'm blessed to have the opportunity to come in here and compete for another job. I'm ready for the year."

The Texans are hoping for a better season overall, and the arrival of new coach DeMeco Ryans brings renewed optimism. Ryans, a former linebacker for the Texans during his playing days, is looking to get the team back on the winning track. The quarterback competition between Mills and Stroud will play a crucial role in shaping the team's success.

Mills understands the challenge ahead but remains focused on his own performance. "I can't control what they decide, but I can control how I go out there and compete," Mills emphasized. "I'm going to give it my all and push myself to the limit. Ultimately, it's about making the team better, and if I can do that by earning the starting job, then that's what I'm aiming for."

The battle between Davis Mills and CJ Stroud will undoubtedly be one of the most closely watched storylines in the Texans' training camp. As the rookie Stroud represents the future, Mills brings experience and determination to the table. It will be fascinating to see how this competition unfolds and how it ultimately shapes the Texans' quarterback position moving forward.

With OTA's underway, the Texans coaching staff will closely evaluate both quarterbacks, considering factors such as arm strength, accuracy, decision-making, and leadership qualities. The competition will not only push Mills and Stroud to elevate their own games but also contribute to the overall improvement of the team.

As the regular season approaches, all eyes will be on the Texans' starting quarterback decision. Will the promising rookie CJ Stroud win the job, or will Davis Mills showcase enough growth and potential to earn the trust of the coaching staff? The answer remains uncertain, but one thing is for sure: the Texans' quarterback battle is set.
