In a move that brings a local talent back home, the New Orleans Saints have signed safety Roderic Teamer to a one-year contract. The 27-year-old New Orleans native joined the team on a tryout basis during minicamp and impressed enough to secure a spot on the roster.
Teamer, who graduated from Tulane and began his NFL journey with the Los Angeles Chargers as an undrafted free agent in 2019, has had a rollercoaster career. In his rookie season, he made an immediate impact with the Chargers, starting six of the seven games he played. However, his time with the team was cut short in August 2020 when he was suspended for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy, leading to his release.
After a brief stint with the Indianapolis Colts in the 2021 offseason, Teamer found a more stable role with the Las Vegas Raiders. Under defensive coordinator Gus Bradley, who previously coached him with the Chargers, Teamer appeared in 10 games during the 2021 season. He became a reliable presence on special teams and a versatile defensive back, contributing in all 17 games for the Raiders in 2022.
Despite his contributions, Teamer’s time with the Raiders ended after his arrest for DUI in November 2023, resulting in his release. He now joins the Saints looking for a fresh start and an opportunity to contribute to his hometown team both on defense and special teams.
Over his career, Teamer has amassed 103 tackles, one sack, and one interception in 40 games, with 11 starts. While there is potential for league discipline stemming from his recent DUI incident, Teamer’s focus will be on making an impact with the Saints as they head into the 2024 season.
