The New Orleans Saints have finally got their man. Derek Carr a 9-year NFL veteran, and 4-time Pro-Bowler agreed to a 4-year 150 million dollar contract with 100 million total guarantees. The signing has got Saints fans buzzing. The Saints' quarterback position has been in limbo for nearly three seasons since the retirement of legendary quarterback Drew Brees. Since Brees stepped down the Saints have had a total of 5 starting quarterbacks. With the signing of Carr, the organization feels that the quarterback carousel may indeed be over. Carr brings in a very respectable quarterback resume. Throughout his career, he has thrown for over 35,000 yards, completed 64 percent of his passes, and orchestrated 33 fourth-quarter comebacks. But Carr also has not been able to help his former team the Las Vegas Raiders get over the hump. He's only played in one playoff game in his 9-year career, and in 2022 he managed to put up some of the worst numbers statistically of his career. Throwing 24 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Carr is looking for a fresh start, but can he lead his new team the New Orleans Saints to the biggest game in sports?
Rather you are one of the biggest Derek Carr fans, or not you have to admit the Saints signing him makes the Saints the frontrunners to win the NFC South. But winning the NFC south is one thing, winning the Super Bowl is another. Derek Carr is a top-15 quarterback in the NFL, but he alone does not possess the skills to lead the Saints to the Super Bowl, and that's okay. But he can be one of the X-Factors that could get the Saints there. Sometimes NFL fans can get a false sense of belief about a player. Thinking that if a quarterback does not have a rocket arm like Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, or the Elusiveness of Lamar Jackson, or big game moments like Tom Brady that they are not good enough to win with, and that is just not true. We see players like Jimmy Garoppolo, and Nick Foles find themselves playing in the final game despite having limited talent. Because their organizations put teams around them to make up for their shortcomings. If the Saints could put a formable team around Derek Carr he has enough ability to win games. The Saints over the last 5 seasons have had a top-five defense led by All-Pro defenders like Cam Jordan DeMario Davis and Tyrann Mathieu. If the defense could replicate what they have been doing it can be enough for Carr to get it done. Carr will also need better offensive line play. Last year the Saints had a lot of injuries on the offensive line. Players like Andrus Peat Ryan Ramczyk, and 2022 First round draft pick Trevor Penning were not available for the majority of the year. Having a stout offensive line could give Carr time to put the ball in the hands of the team's playmakers like Chris Olave, Rasheed Shahid, and Michael Thomas. (pending the Saints working out a deal with Thomas) Alvin Kamara could be a huge help as well. But Kamara could be facing a suspension by the NFL after being caught on camera fighting in Las Vegas during Pro Bowl weekend in 2022.
Derek Carr may be in the best situation he has been in, in his 9-year career. He has never played alongside a top-five defense, and he has never been a part of an organization this stable. This all could be a recipe for success. With a top 5 defense, along with Carr. The Saints may have the perfect combination for a magical 2023 season.
