Chants Fall Short in Homecoming Clash Against Ragin' Cajuns

Writer: Timothy J. JonesTimothy J. Jones

In an electrifying matchup that embodied the spirit of rivalry, the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers faced off against the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns on Homecoming Saturday. Despite a valiant effort, Coastal Carolina fell short, succumbing to a 34-24 defeat, marking a challenging chapter in their 2024 season.

The Chanticleers, led by quarterback Noah Kim—who stepped in for Ethan Vasko—showed resilience after trailing 14-0 early in the game. Kim's arrival sparked a rally, allowing Coastal to tie the game thanks to a dynamic 49-yard pitch-and-run play executed by Braydon Bennett. Kim finished the day with a personal best of 145 yards and two touchdown passes, proving he has the potential to lead the team moving forward.

Despite the optimistic moments, Coastal's struggles were evident. A history of mistakes, including dropped passes and special teams blunders, weighed heavily on the team's performance. Coach Tim Beck acknowledged the impact of these early setbacks, noting, "The mistakes and the early deficit proved too much for us to overcome."

On the other side, the Ragin' Cajuns, fueled by Ben Wooldridge's impressive performance—completing 27 of 36 passes for 373 yards and four total touchdowns—demonstrated their prowess on the field. Wooldridge's highlights included a deep 59-yard touchdown pass to Terrance Carter, who himself had a standout game with seven catches for a career-high 149 yards. Kenneth Almendares also made history, kicking three field goals to become Louisiana's all-time leader, including a crucial 38-yarder that solidified the Ragin' Cajuns' lead with five minutes left in the game.

This clash held significant weight in the context of the long-standing rivalry between the two programs, a rivalry that has blossomed despite a less obvious geographical connection. With intense battles dating back to their Sun Belt Conference introductions in 2017, the Ragin' Cajuns and Chanticleers have faced each other in high-stakes scenarios. Notably, their previous meeting in 2020 saw Coastal snatch a 30-27 victory in a thrilling finish, further igniting the competitive fire between the two teams.

As the Chants entered this game on a mission to prove their mettle against a formidable opponent, the atmosphere at Brooks Stadium was electric, underscored by the Homecoming festivities. Fans rallied behind their team, hoping for a redemption story against their rivals. Unfortunately, despite gathering over 200 rushing yards and a strong effort from Bennett, who recorded 132 rushing yards, the Chanticleers couldn’t sustain their momentum against the Ragin’ Cajuns' explosive offense.

The loss leaves Coastal Carolina at 4-3 overall and 1-2 in the Sun Belt, prompting a need for reflection as they look to regroup in the coming weeks. As the season progresses, the Chanticleers will need to tighten up their execution and minimize mistakes if they hope to capitalize on their potential.

With the rivalry rekindled and the stakes as high as ever, fans will undoubtedly be looking forward to the next meeting between these two passionate programs. The Ragin' Cajuns may have taken this round, but the Chanticleers are eager to bounce back and make their mark as the season continues.
